Haberdashers’ Monmouth School Lead Wales to Top 8 Finish at U20 World Lacrosse Championship

September 4, 2024

Florrie (Captain), Zoë (Vice-Captain), and Freya showcased their talent and leadership at the Lacrosse World Cup.

We are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of three of our HMS girls who played pivotal roles in helping Wales secure 7th place at the U20 World Lacrosse Championship in Hong Kong this August.

Outstanding Performances on the World Stage

Florrie (Captain), Zoë (Vice-Captain), and Freya showcased their talent and leadership in an increasingly competitive tournament. With the age group expanding from U19 to U20, allowing US college sophomores to compete, the challenge was greater than ever. Despite the tough competition, Wales finished second in their group behind world No. 2 Canada and defeated the Haudenosaunee to secure a spot in the top 8.

Wales Secures 7th Place Amid Fierce Competition

In the final stages, Wales faced intense matches against Australia (4th) and Puerto Rico (5th), ultimately finishing just behind England in 6th place. Out of the 20 teams competing, their 7th place finish was a testament to their skill and determination.

The tournament was hosted at prestigious venues like the Hong Kong Football Club within the Hong Kong Jockey Club racecourse and was given significant recognition across the city, equalling the status of events like the Hong Kong Sevens and the Hong Kong Open Golf Tournament.

Reunion with Former Coach Adds Special Touch

A special highlight for the girls was reuniting with their former Lacrosse coach and Head of Sport, Miss Scott, who officiated at the tournament for World Lacrosse. Miss Scott was overjoyed to witness her former students’ success on the world stage.

Continuing the Haberdashers’ Monmouth Lacrosse Legacy

This achievement continues the long-standing tradition of Habs girls earning Welsh and English caps in Lacrosse at both Junior and Senior levels. With the Wales Senior Women’s team, featuring Habs alumna Madison Jones, recently qualifying for the World Women’s Lacrosse Championships in Japan in 2026 and the 2028 Olympics on the horizon, the future looks incredibly bright for our talented athletes.

Congratulations to Florrie, Zoë, and Freya on their outstanding performance! We look forward to following their continued success in the years to come.
