Swimmers at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools won a clutch of medals at the Urdd National Gala in Cardiff.

Monmouth School Girls’ Prep clinched two gold medals, a silver and a bronze, while Monmouth School for Girls bagged three silvers.

It was an exciting weekend for the Monmouth swimmers who had qualified for the national finals previously and represented the county of Gwent with distinction.

Emma, Isabella, Sophie and Ailsa formed Monmouth School Girls’ Prep under-11s freestyle relay team which won a team gold in the primary school event.

Carys, Adelaide, Zara and Elin won a team gold in the under-10s freestyle relay event and then clinched silver in the under-10s medley relay team class.

Emma capped a memorable day for the Monmouth School Girls’ Prep swimmers with an individual bronze in the under-11s breaststroke.

In the senior schools’ event, Ellie clinched an individual silver medal in the 100m breaststroke and then joined with Lucy, Katie and Hattie to win a silver in the Year 11 freestyle relay.

Katie, Ellie, Eva and Laura combined to win a silver medal in the Year 11-and-above medley relay.

The Year 9 freestyle relay team of Hope, Ella, Holly and Amelia cut two seconds off their qualifying time but narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the final.

Eva also swam impressively, knocking four seconds off her qualifying time to finish a respectable fourth in the 200m individual medley final.

“The Monmouth girls gave 100% in every race and were an absolute credit to the schools,” said coach, Kate Jarvis, who guided the senior swimmers.

“The girls showed tremendous teamwork, supported each other throughout and represented the schools and the county of Gwent with tremendous pride.”
