Runners make positive start to new season

The junior runners from Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools have made a positive start to the new Gwent Cross Country League campaign.

The A team from Monmouth School Boys’ Prep are fifth in the standings after the opening fixture at Llandaff Fields in Cardiff.

And the A team from Monmouth School Girls’ Prep are eighth after totalling 313 points – 87 more than they amassed throughout the whole of last season.

Matthew was the first runner home for Monmouth in the 1,250 metres novice boys’ section, coming 20th out of 101 starters from clubs all over Wales.

Matthew clocked a finishing time of 5:07, while Rupert (5:20), Joshua (5:21) and John  (5:21) finished 32nd, 33rd and 34th respectively.

Tom K was 44th, while Tom Cl was 52nd, Thomas, 62nd, Freddie, 73rd and Edward, 82nd

The boys’ A team collected 289 points and trail third-placed Cardiff AAC by just 27. The B team are 12th, with a haul of 181 points, just two behind Blaenau Gwent AC.

Jess was the first athlete home for Monmouth in the 1,250 metres novice girls’ section, coming 22nd in 5:29, from a starting field of 115 runners.

Thandi and Grace, who both clocked 5:52 were 37th and 38th respectively, while Alice was 54th, Kezia, 60th and Emily, 90th.

The girls’ B team are in a respectable 26th place – with 82 points – out of 36 teams.

The boys and girls from Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools will be looking to build on the solid foundations in the second league fixture at Pembrey Country Park, near Llanelli, on Saturday 10th November.
