Queen Victoria visits Monmouth School Girls’ Prep

September 21, 2017

Pupils at Monmouth School Girls’ Prep were transported back to the Victorian times for a fun and factual theme-packed day.

Girls in Years 3 and 4 wore clothing from the era and even Queen Victoria made a special appearance.

The children were told about the 10 worst jobs for children between 1837 and 1901, while crime and punishment was another theme explored.

The girls found out about the horrors of the workhouse and had an opportunity to compare the toys which poor and rich children would have played with.

Year 5 pupil Issy said:  “I saw some chimney sweeps and the attention to detail was amazing, some even had coal smeared on their faces.

“Experts brought in models which looked really interesting and told lots of interesting facts about the Victorians.

“Mrs Phillips got into the spirit of things by carrying a cane around the school playground looking for naughty children. Luckily, there was no-one misbehaving that day.”
