Lanterns for St Martin

December 7, 2015

St MartinIn German Club, the children are learning about St Martin’s Day.

They have been making lanterns and started to learn a new German song, which they sang as they processed around Inglefield House. In Germany, St Martin’s Day is on the 11th of November every year and it is very popular with children. They celebrate by dancing around bonfires. The procession of lanterns is led by an actor dressed up as a saint. St Martin was a Roman legionary who later became a Bishop. When he was riding his horse, he saw a beggar in the street and gave him half his coat to save him from freezing. The Inglefield Bulletin caught up with some of the German Club members to find out how they felt about the Saint Martin celebrations. “I felt nervous and happy when we were singing around the school,” said Ottilie from Year 3.
