Icy experiments with negative numbers

February 1, 2016

Icy experimentLast week the Year 5s conducted an icy experiment using thermometers.

In Maths the girls have been studying negative numbers and the late arrival of winter provided the perfect opportunity to get outside and to explore negative numbers through measuring the temperature.

Inside Inglefield House the temperature measured at 20º Celsius. However, by the time we got outside the temperature dropped from 20º all the way to 0º! We waited outside for five more chilly minutes to see if it would drop any further. It crept down by only one more degree, to -1º. Eventually we went back into the warm and looked at our estimates to see how close we were. We were all surprised by just how much the temperature had changed – we definitely need to be prepared for all weathers!
