About us

A great school for learning and making friends…

“Light, welcoming buildings in beautiful countryside, create an inspiring home from home where learning comes naturally.”

Even the buildings at Monmouth School for Girls embody the school’s ethos of combining the best of traditional values with the modern needs of today’s students.

Ultra-modern, purpose-built facilities nestle alongside beautifully restored listed buildings, providing a stimulating environment where pupils can focus on their academic goals, feed their personal interests and belong to a wider community.

Monmouth School for Girls Pupil Profile

There are no typical pupils at Monmouth School for Girls.  Every girl has her own personal strengths and goals to strive for, from musical and sporting achievements, or academic excellence, to a huge range of individual aspirations, ambitions and objectives in life as well as during their time at school.

Whatever your daughter’s goals may be, the seven elements to the Monmouth School for Girls Pupil Profile – common to all girls that attend our school – will help her achieve her ambitions. In common with the Haberdashers’ Company’s own Mission Statement, the Monmouth School for Girls pupil is always:

  • Intellectually curious
  • Open-minded
  • Innovative
  • Acting as a good citizen
  • Co-operative
  • Appreciating cultural diversity
  • Rounded

Traditional values such as respect are valued even more in today’s challenging world

That is why all pupils at the school are encouraged to treat each other with respect and to recognise that good behaviour and regard for others is at the heart of the school ethos. Every aspect of school life is a part of a pupil’s education. It is essential, therefore, that the highest standards are set by all members of the school.

School House System

Students at Monmouth School for Girls enjoy a family atmosphere in a happy and caring environment. This is enhanced by our wonderful House system, where each girl is allocated to one of four School Houses at the beginning of her school career.

Named after prominent former Governors, they are:

  • Bagnall Oakeley (House Colour – Purple)
  • Imbert Terry (House Colour – Green)
  • Mather Jackson (House Colour – Blue)
  • Prosser (House Colour – Yellow)

The grouping of students together in Houses, which runs vertically throughout the school years, enables strong friendships to be formed across year groups.

Both boarders and day girls are integrated into all Houses, ensuring pupils bond together and develop a unique sense of community and belonging, as well as encouraging vital teambuilding and teamwork skills.

The House system can often be pupils’ first real experience of the values of loyalty and responsibility – and those House Loyalties come to the fore in a fun, competitive environment which encourages girls to join in and build on the particular talents they have.

State-of-the-art Facilities

Our exceptional facilities include ample IT suites, hi-tech science laboratories, specialist art, pottery, design and technology workshops, science suites, music rehearsal rooms, a well-equipped recording studio and a reference and careers library boasting thousands of fiction and reference books.

Sporting facilities too, are superb, while the school’s exceptional location in the heart of the Wye Valley is especially inspiring for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits. On-site facilities include spacious playing fields, a gymnasium, tennis courts, an indoor pool, a sports hall and an all-weather pitch. The adjacent River Wye also offers ample opportunity for competitive rowing and regular river practice.

The latest technologies enable students to stay a vital step ahead…

Each girl’s education will naturally be supported by the latest technologies, allowing her to achieve her full academic potential. IT suites are equipped with everything pupils need to carry out homework, study and research projects. Plus, an innovative, fully interactive ‘Intranet’ allows both pupils and staff to keep up to date and continue to gain the most from the school’s educational resources 24/7 – whether they are studying from home, during the school holidays or in the boarding houses.

Inside the classrooms, interactive whiteboards allow teachers to fully bring their subjects to life in lively, imaginative and engaging ways.
