Triple triumph in German debating competition

February 4, 2020

Three teams at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools triumphed in the Bristol Schools’ German Debates.

The Year 11, 12 and 13 language students replicated the successes of last year and won their sections in the annual competition at Clifton College.

The Year 11 team was Eden, Carys and Teddy.

Sinead, Anna and Edward represented Year 12, with Jena, Ellie and Soha representing Year 13. The Year 12 team was supported Harry.

The debating task is a daunting challenge in a modern foreign language.

It involves a good deal of prior research and teamwork to develop a solid argument prior to event; presenting a cogent argument on the night to an interested, yet often critical, audience; sharp wit, quick-thinking and excellent linguistic skills to cope with questions from the floor; confidence and resilience, when linguistically caught on the hop.

“We saw wonderful qualities in our students and are hugely proud of their achievements,” said Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Monmouth School for Girls, Mrs Helen Smail.

“We extend our thanks and congratulations to all those who participated.”
