Students impress in European Youth Parliament debates

March 12, 2020

Sixth Form students at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools have shone in a European Youth Parliament debating event.

The team worked together superbly and its resolution was passed with the biggest majority of the day.

“On arrival we were immediately thrown in at the deep end and involved in a mock debate on whether pineapples deserve their place on a pizza,” said Iwan.

Further topics included far right extremism, Euroscepticism and mass extinction.

And, finally, the Monmouth team’s resolution of what the European Union could do to increase youth involvement in politics was discussed.

“After two outstanding speeches from Nick and Sheida, our opposition was swept aside and the resolution was passed with the largest majority of the day,” said Iwan.

The day was a very useful insight into the practises of the European Parliament and the issues it faces.

Iwan added: “A large thank-you to Dr Hugo Whately for providing us with the opportunity to attend this wonderful competition.”
