Sprinter Antonia storms to East Wales title

A multi-event athlete from Monmouth School for Girls is celebrating after storming to the East Wales Under 15 Indoor 300m title.

Antonia, who represented Newport Harriers, also clinched silver in the high jump at the Welsh Athletics Junior Open in Cardiff.

Antonia’s brother Harry, a pupil at Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, was crowned the East Wales Under 11 Boys’ Cross-Country champion in Brecon last month.

Dad, Alex, said: “Antonia is a multi-eventer (pentathlon) but is discovering that she is a pretty good sprinter at the longer distances.

“She ran the 300 metres in 46.58 seconds which is two seconds slower than her personal best of 44.42 on a normal outdoor track.

“All her main rivals ran slower times indoors because the indoor track is only 200m and has much tighter bends.”

Antonia, 13, was delighted to have improved on last year’s bronze medal in the high jump, coming equal second for East Wales.

The competition, at the National Indoor Athletic Centre (NIAC), incorporated the South Wales Championships and the South West England Regional Championships.

Last summer, the Year 9 pupil was the South East Wales School District Under 15 800m champion.

She has now been selected to run for East Wales at the Welsh Inter-Regional Cross-Country Championships.
