Special guests at Downing Street celebration

February 28, 2020

A Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools family was among the special guests at the Prime Minister’s St David’s Day reception in London.

The Walker family and friend, Katie Cameron, a former pupil at Monmouth School for Girls, celebrated St David’s Day at 10 Downing Street in recognition of the work they have done in raising money for Cancer Research Wales.

With support from friends, family and the Monmouth community, dad, Tim; mum, Debbie; and sisters Holly and Emily have tirelessly raised more than £130,000 for research into Acute Myeloid Leukaemia following the death of their son, Tom.

Tom was a kind and caring pupil at Monmouth School for Boys and a member of Monnow Swimming Club.

He died unexpectedly and suddenly from leukaemia in June 2018, aged 13.

An inaugural Swim for Tom in January 2019 was supported by more than 600 people and raised more than £25,000 for Cancer Research Wales.

And more than 500 people took this plunge in this year’s uplifting Swim for Tom, organised by Katie Cameron and Holly Walker, raising funds in excess of £12,000.

The Cancer Wales PhD Studentship for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia Research was officially created last year and an appointed researcher is due to start this September.

Cancer Research Wales’ third edition of the Brecon Beacons Night Hike takes place on Friday 20th March and all money raised from this challenge will support cancer research projects in memory of Tom.

Guided and supported by professional mountain leaders, the hikers will light up the night sky whilst climbing Pen Y Fan from Storey Arms, before descending back down via the National Trail for some well-earned refreshments.
