A selected group of Year 11 and 12 pupils, who have expressed an interest in studying medicine or engineering, were privileged to attend the state-of-the-art “Teeth and Brains” department at Renishaw plc., in Wotton-Under-Edge.  Renishaw is one of the UK’s most successful and progressive engineering companies.  The students were able to learn about how the precision measuring probes that made the company famous are used in a variety of techniques, including dentistry and brain surgery.

They watched some gruesome videos of brain surgery taking place; and they had an opportunity to practise, hands on, how to use the planning software for the surgical robots used in stereotactic neurosurgery for procedures including Deep Brain Stimulation, which is used to treat Parkinson’s disease.

The girls also watched a technician demonstrate the scanning machine which helps to make new teeth and gums for cancer patients and victims of road accidents or knee or hip implants using 3D titanium printers.

One of the graduate engineers present was Jessica Henson, an HMSG old girl and the senior engineer was an Old Monmothian. We hope to continue to supply engineers of the future!
