Ice skater Maeve qualifies for national championships

Hours in the rink have paid off for one dedicated girl who has qualified to compete alongside the top 24 skaters of her level in Britain.

Maeve, a pupil at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, will be taking part in the British Solo Ice Dance Championships in Sheffield on July 15th.

This comes after the talented 13-year-old was scouted for a role in the professional Nutcracker on Ice Christmas show at Ice Arena Wales in December.

Her mum, Sharon, said: “Recently, Maeve has had some challenging competitions when things haven’t quite gone according to plan, but I have been so proud of how she has reacted to the setbacks.  She has just stayed focused, put her boots back on and gone back on the ice for her next skate to try and do better.”

Maeve trains four times a week and last year came ninth out of 24 skaters in a nationwide competition.

The ambitious teen fell in love with the sport when she discovered it around three years ago.

She said: “Skating gives me a focus. I love the feeling of gliding across the ice. I really like wearing the costumes too.”

Good luck in Sheffield Maeve!
