Girls race to brilliant National Schools’ bronze in event dedicated to late Haberdashers’ pupil

June 2, 2014

HABERDASHERS’ young rowers stormed through to snatch a brilliant bronze at Nottingham’s National Water Sports Centre in the National Schools’ Championships

U15 coxed four Hannah, Josephine, Aoife, Gabby and cox Rachel qualified third in their semi, and lay fourth just out of the medals at half-way in a very tight final.

But they had pushed into third by 1500m and were overlapping winners Henley and silver medallists Bedford Modern on the line, with just over a length’s lead on Emanuel in fourth.

“I’m really proud of them, it was a well deserved medal,” said chief coach Kate Callaghan. “We were racing for the Katrina Jacks Memorial Trophy dedicated to our former Habs rower who tragically died in 2010, so it was quite emotional. We’d have loved to have won it for her, but it was still a superb effort.”

However, there was disappointment for the U18 girls in their Championship fours event after setting the fastest semi-final time, as they were too slow away and left themselves too much to do, finishing fifth three lengths off gold.

Their U16 four with three U15s in the boat did well to make the final, but had to settle for sixth.
