Georgina climbs to national title successJanuary 29th, 2019
Monmouth’s students are celebrating after winning two top titles at the annual Wales Cadet Indoor Climbing Championships in Cardiff.
Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools were crowned overall Combined Cadet Force (CCF) champions for the fourth successive year at Boulders Climbing Centre.
Georgina, 17, clinched the senior women’s individual title and the team finished runners-up in the competition overall.
Fifteen-year-old Harry capped a memorable day for Monmouth, taking third place in the individual senior climb-off section.
Climbing is set to make its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Monmouth’s students, guided by Mr Matt Peake, showed outstanding aptitude after only two training sessions.
The eight cadets were a credit to Monmouth School for Boys and Monmouth School for Girls in the national event on Saturday 26th January.
The gravity defying pace of 16-year-old Edward helped Monmouth to the runners-up spot in the team speed-climbing event.
In the senior ladies’ individual final, Georgina climbed with style and grit, on a physically demanding technical route, to deservedly take the title.
Harry performed well to reach the senior climb-off final where he finished third against cadets with far more experience.
And Ben, 15, also put in an impressive showing, making it through to the senior final despite still being a junior.
James, 14, 16-year-old Jacob, Toby, 14, and Zeb, 14, also climbed with maturity and were important members of Monmouth’s successful CCF team.
