A teenager, who is hoping to become an overseas diplomat, has been hailed nationally for a remarkable examination result.

Sophie , a Sixth Form student at Monmouth School for Girls, achieved the highest mark in the world for her Cambridge IGCSE Geography examination in the summer.

Sophie, 16, was presented with her certificate by Headmistress, Mrs Jessica Miles, in assembly on Friday 18th October.

The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards programme celebrates the success of learners taking Cambridge examinations in over 40 countries around the world.

The Cambridge Top in the World accolade is given to learners worldwide who secure the highest standard mark for a single subject.

Headmistress, Mrs Miles, said the award recognised the talent, dedication and commitment of pupils and staff at Monmouth School for Girls.

Mrs Miles added: “It is extremely rewarding to congratulate Sophie and her teachers who have worked so hard to achieve tremendous success in the Cambridge IGCSE Geography examinations.”

Sophie’s IGCSE Geography teacher, Mrs Julia Harper, said: “Full credit to Sophie. She worked incredibly hard and is wholly deserving of this award. I am thrilled with her success and very proud of her achievement.”

It has been a successful time for Sophie, who is taking A levels in English, History and German.

Next month, Sophie will be meeting young people from across the UK and Germany to discuss environmental initiatives and future projects.

The four-day summit in Germany, for which Sophie has been selected, is being sponsored by the British Embassy in Berlin and the UK-German Connection.
