Three pupils at Monmouth School for Girls have triumphed in a geography competition about Wales.

Year 9 pupils Rosa, 13, Rose, 13, and Eleanor, 14, teamed up to win the Geographical Association’s (GA) WelshWise quiz in Cardiff.

A team at Monmouth School for Boys carried off the top prize in the competition last year.

The quiz is co-ordinated by the GA Special Interest Group for Wales and gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and skills, especially in relation to current events and matters of global and local significance.

Year 8 pupils Carys, Anna and Anwen also impressed against teams from six other secondary schools in South Wales at Glamorgan Rooms, University of Cardiff.

Rosa, Rose and Eleanor took the lead at the half-way stage of the quiz managed to maintain their advantage to become the 2020 South Wales champions.

The current GA President, Gill Miller, led the quiz masters and presented questions on a range of topics, including Wales in numbers, Wales in the news, urban Wales and coastal Wales.

“The eight rounds were challenging but also very interesting, with the girls learning a great deal about the amazing geography of Wales,” said Mr Nick Meek, Head of Geography at Monmouth School for Girls.

“The girls learned some Welsh because some of the rounds were bilingual and the teams also had a short talk from the Geography admissions tutor at the University of Cardiff.

“Our pupils were magnificent, great ambassadors for the school and it was the second overall win from our girls in this competition in six years.”
