The Haberdashers’ Monmouth Tennis Academy (HMTA), seeks to inspire, encourage and nurture players to reach their full potential in tennis. Academy players can expect superior tennis coaching throughout the academic year and access to excellent facilities and support, whilst also receiving a top quality education.

At the schools, tennis is both a social and performance sport that encourages discipline and improves work ethic. It helps to build character and integrity whilst having fun. The social skills gained through training and performing help to build lifelong friendships. Our teachers and coaches aim to create a positive learning environment that helps to develop teamwork and communication skills.

Monmouth School for Girls tennisHMTA offers programmes tailored to individuals from age 7 – 18 in the following categories:

  • HMTA Red (under 8)
  • HMTA Orange (under 9)
  • HMTA Green (under 10)
  • HMTA Development (11 and over)
  • HMTA High Performance (dependent on ability)

Parent lessons are also available on a Tuesday morning.

Meet the coaching staff

Chris Davis, Head Coach

Head Coach Chris Davis

Chris graduated from Loughborough University and has coached tennis for over 40 years. An experienced match player Chris has represented Gloucestershire on a number of occasions. He has spoken at the Lawn Tennis Association’s ( L.T.A.) National Conference, and assisted with national strategic thinking. He was recognised with an Award by the L.T.A. for his outstanding contribution to tennis development.

Since moving to Monmouth over 17 years ago, Chris has been instrumental in establishing a number of quality tennis initiatives locally. He has run numerous teacher training events across Wales, on behalf of the L.T.A, in both primary and secondary schools. Chris was also a Senior Education Officer in Gloucestershire for over 20 years specialising in youth provision and opportunities for 14-21 year olds and has a lot of experience in the wider educational context. Chris has led on tennis development at Haberdashers’ Monmouth since 2009.

Adam Davis, Development and High Performance Coach

Adam Davis Tennis Academy

Adam started playing tennis at the age of 7 and by 14 had reached National standard. He was Gloucestershire County Champion for 5 successive years as a Junior. On moving to Wales, Adam represented South Wales and played at a high standard winning many accolades and tournaments. Adam won a Tennis Scholarship to Chester University and then worked for Mark Warner as a Tennis Professional coaching in a number of locations in Greece. Adam has also coached both in America and New Zealand where he gained invaluable coaching experience and knowledge.

Since returning to Monmouth, he has secured the post of Head Coach at Penalt Tennis Club, where he provides extensive coaching opportunities for both juniors and adults. Adam has worked as part of the Haberdashers’ Monmouth tennis coaching team since 2012.


Haberdashers’ Monmouth Tennis Academy (HMTA) players train all year around. Coaching programmes can be tailored to suit the individual and can consist of 1:1 coaching or group coaching up to a maximum of 1:6. All sessions are arranged to fit around the players’ academic studies, be it, early morning, afternoons, evenings or weekends.

Additionally, we run non-residential, co-ed Tennis Camps during school holidays, participation in which will be offered on a half-day, full-day or weekly basis, subject to availability.


All tennis players at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools have the opportunity to play in fixtures against other independent schools during the summer term. These are doubles and mixed-doubles matches.

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Tennis Academy (HMTA) High Performance players compete all year around. Competitions are a mixture of local and national, singles and doubles, match play events and internal competitions.
