International students

Applications

The excitement of joining a boarding school in another country is not lost on us here at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools. We strive to ensure that every international student feels welcome and at home in wonderful Wales. Monmouth, birthplace of King Henry V, is a beautiful historical town situated just 2 miles from the Welsh/English border. The picturesque high street and the luscious green countryside will feel like home in no time.

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools welcomes applications from international candidates for all year groups. Boarding is available from Year 3 – Year 13 (ages 7-18 years).

We welcome pupils from all over the world and host a wonderful community representing over 20 different nationalities.

All international students will be taught in English and therefore are required to have a good working knowledge of the language. English as an Additional Language (EAL) is provided by experienced English teachers, for those that require it.

Further information on international students can be found here

Entry assessments

Candidates are required to sit online entrance assessments in English and Mathematics.

All candidates will be invited to a virtual interview with the Head or member of our senior school academic staff. The interview gives an opportunity for the candidate to talk about their interests and passions.  We encourage candidates to practise talking at home about their hobbies and current affairs, so that they can talk as freely as possible during the interview.

We will also require a report from the candidate’s current school.

Sixth Form

In addition to these entry assessments, international pupils applying for entry to our Sixth Form will also be required to complete two subject papers in the subjects they wish to study at A level. The selected exam subjects must have been studied for a minimum of two years, excepting subjects which are not taught prior to Year 12.

Sixth Form Foundation Year

Girls and boys aged 15 and 16 from outside the UK where English is not their first language can complete a one-year IGCSE course in preparation to study A levels in the UK.

Normally, IGCSE courses take two years but by using intensive teaching, modern facilities and working with students in small groups, the school is able to prepare students for these examinations in just one year. Boys and girls are taught together in mixed classes across both schools.

One Year IGCSE students are integrated into boarding, pastoral and School’s social life, providing a perfect preparation for Sixth Form study and a much broader education experience than that offered by an international school in the UK.

The subjects that students must take are:

  • English as a Second Language
  • Mathematics
  • Geography
  • Dual Award Science (equivalent to two IGCSEs)
  • Their own language
