A joint win for HMSG in the first GA Welshwise Quiz

July 6, 2015

On 30th June HMSG and Monmouth School entered teams of Year 8 and Year 9 pupils for the first Geographical Association’s Welshwise Quiz. Tegwen, Meghan and Soha represented Year 8, and Katie, Katherine and Stephanie represented Year 9.

The location of the quiz were the impressive Committee Rooms in the Glamorgan Building of Cardiff University. A warm welcome was given by Cardiff University, School of Planning and Geography, who informed the gathered teams about the opportunities that geography could offer in the future.

This was the first ever Welshwise Quiz offering a fun Geography competition for schools in South Wales and another for schools in North Wales. Eight schools were represented from South Wales. There were eight rounds of questions starting with – where in Wales are we? Pupils’ knowledge and skills were tested on a range of topics from Mapwork skills to Welsh history and culture and Wales in the Wider World. The questions were challenging and thought-provoking, including the percentage of welsh waste recycled and that Wales was the first fair-trade nation.

HMSG’s Year 9 team were leaders at the half way point and joint leaders with one round to go. A tricky last round saw the Year 9 team, together with a team from Stanwell School in Penarth, crowned joint winners of the Welshwise Quiz. Our Year 8 team coped well with the questions and gained a great deal from the experience.

Congratulations to all the pupils who attended the quiz. They rose to the challenge and will have gained a great deal from the experience. Welsh geography certainly has much to offer. HMSG look forward to returning to Cardiff next June to defend their title.
