Rich World, Poor World

Enter this competition and marvel at the huge differences in wealth around the world.  Gasp at the decadent lifestyles of the rich and famous.  Find out how half the world lives on less than $2.50 a day.  It’s an unequal world out there!

This year’s competition focused on wealth.  Pupils were tasked with producing an information booklet; write a poem or rap song; design a poster or comic strip about our unequal world.  They were asked to consider the issues facing the world’s poor and how can we make the world a more equal place.

Year 7 were introduced to differences in wealth around the world and also to the fact that there are even big differences of wealth in poorer countries.  India has the highest number of poor in the world.  42% live on less than $1.25 a day.  Yet India also has 55 billionaires.  The Antilia Residential Complex in South Mumbai is the most expensive home in the world. It includes a staff of 600 and cost $50-70 million.

The standard of entries as ever was very high.  The quality of the research and presentation made judging the competition very difficult.  Prizes and certificates were presented in a Year 7 Assembly with kind support from Mrs Griffiths, Head of Year.

Third place went to Yasmin who produced a poverty leaflet investigating the Sudan and Mexico.  Second place was awarded to Maya, whose India poster contained lots of interesting facts and was very eye-catching.  First place was awarded to Amelia for her two excellent poems, one written from the point of view of the world’s rich and the second from the world’s poor.  It is hoped that extracts from these poems will appear in the Geography pages of the next HMSG Magazine.
