The free-scoring first team at Monmouth School for Girls swept the board to win the seniors’ Welsh National Netball Tournament for the first time.

Captained by Florence, the Monmouth girls stormed to seven successive victories, amassing a remarkable 106 goals and conceding only 29 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

The girls thoroughly deserved their triumph in the Urdd Cup and their performances delighted their coach Mrs Sian Morgan, the teacher in charge of netball at Monmouth School for Girls.

The Monmouth girls dazzled in their pool matches, thrashing Colege Dewi Sant 21-0, beating Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw 16-4 and Treforys 18-1 before defeating Cwm Rhymni B 13-9.

The girls continued their fine form to record a convincing 12-3 victory against Treorci in the quarter-finals.

They worked hard to overcome Gyfun Gwyr 11-5 in their semi-final before clinching the seniors’ Urdd Cup with a 15-7 success against Glantaf in the final.

A proud Mrs Morgan said: “The girls did so well throughout the tournament and worked very hard for each other.

“The girls have a brilliant team ethic, learn very quickly to adapt to match situations, support one another and are a great team to work with.”

The Urdd is a national voluntary youth organisation established in 1922 to provide unique and exciting experiences for young people aged 8 to 25 years, all through the medium of Welsh.
