Former Glamorgan cricketer coaches spinners

A former Glamorgan star who represented England at under-19 level has been putting a group of Monmouth cricketers in a spin.

Dean Cosker, who clocked up more than 20 years as player at Glamorgan, has been running specialist spin-bowling sessions with pupils at Monmouth School for Boys.

Young spinners Sam and Owen, who play their club cricket for the town, worked with Cosker in the latest session at Monmouth School Sports Club.

Former Glamorgan players David Harrison, Mark Wallace and Steve James have also visited the school this winter to coach Monmouth’s pupils.

Monmouth School for Boys formed an exciting partnership with Glamorgan earlier this year, which was launched with a flagship match against a Wales youth team at Sophia Gardens.

“I have been very impressed with the attitude of all the spin bowlers I have worked with at Monmouth,” said Mr Cosker, a left-arm spinner, who snapped up more than 500 first-class wickets for Glamorgan.

“The boys are good listeners who are willing to learn, and have natural instincts in how to be a good spin bowler.

“We have worked on accuracy and positioning on the crease, but I have been getting the boys to bowl again after a break, and to think like a spin bowler.

“Hopefully, we can put a four to eight week plan in place to help the boys before they start bowling outdoors in April.”

Mr Cosker shone in the limited-overs format of the game during his career, where his bowling and electric fielding – most often at backward-point – were a great asset.

He added: “I get a buzz from trying to help young players in Wales and hopefully my input can aid the cricketers at Monmouth School for Boys.

“It’s very humbling to be involved in a young spin bowler’s development.”
