The recent Haberdashers’ Monmouth School festive Plum Pudding rowing races provided the perfect occasion to round off a successful year for our rowers and savour one last get together before Christmas. This unique event featured some delightful elements, including a dinosaur as a cox!
Against the backdrop of a brisk Saturday morning on the River Wye, three crews of rowers adorned in Christmas fancy dress raced for the plum puddings.
In the initial race, ‘Jingle My Bells’ narrowly triumphed over the spirited ‘Here come the Ho Ho Hos.’ Subsequently, the ‘Santa’s Submarines’ faced off against the ‘Here come’ team, overcoming a near boat collision to set the stage for an exhilarating final between ‘Jingle My Bells’ and ‘Santa’s Submarines’
‘Santa’s Submarines’ clinched victory by a margin of less than a boat’s length, securing the top spot overall. The triumphant Santas, comprising Tomos, Phil, Ollie, James, Ben, George, Patrick, Alex, and Alec, emerged as the stars of the day.
Reflecting on the event, John Griffiths, GB cap and former Master in charge of rowing said, “It was a fantastic day to tie up loose ends from my tenure as Master i/c Rowing at Monmouth School.”
