Students at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools are celebrating another year of excellent A level results. As grade boundaries return to pre-Covid levels for the first time the schools’ results remained impressive, with 68% of grades at A*-B, well above the national average of 54%.
Whilst many of the students will be taking up places at some of the UK’s most prestigious universities, the diverse range of career paths chosen by the students reflects the broad and comprehensive curricular and co-curricular programmes offered at the school, enabling the students to showcase their talents and passions.
Individual Successes
Head Boy, Oliver Lloyd, has secured a place at Trinity College, Cambridge, with three A* grades, to study Law, with a deferred entry for 2025. Alexander Hicks will also be heading to Cambridge, where he will study Natural Sciences at Robinson College after achieving three A*s and an A. Freddie Criddle also achieved three A*s, as did Tabitha Prosser-Wrench who, with an additional A* in her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), has been offered a place at the University of Bristol to study Biochemistry with Medical Biochemistry. Nia Johnson, who joined Haberdashers’ Monmouth School on a scholarship in the Sixth Form from West Monmouth School, also excelled, securing an A* and three As and will be studying Medicine at Cardiff University.
Among other standout performers, Miles Taylor, a music and academic scholar, achieved an outstanding four A*s and will be heading to the University of Southampton to study Computer Science with Cyber Security, whilst Deputy Head Boy, William Lewis, achieved three A*s and will be reading Natural Sciences at Durham University.
Strong Support Reaps Rewards
There are a number of students who have juggled their academic studies, with the strong support of their teachers, whilst pursuing their sporting dreams. These include Jack Woods, who recently received a professional contract with Bath RFU and Welsh netballer, Annie Taylor, who is heading off to Newcastle to study Law. Others have benefitted from strong school support in other ways. Ukrainian student, Mariia Kopan, joined the school following the outbreak of war and has excelled in her exams, achieving A*AB and will read Politics at the University of Exeter.
International Success
The school has always enjoyed welcoming international students and Jayden Su, from Hong Kong, gained A*AA and will be reading Law at King’s College London. Ada Liu, who achieved A*AA, will be heading to the University of Bristol to study Environmental Geoscience, whilst Kwun Yin Ng, with two A*s and two As, will read Experimental Linguistics at University College London (UCL).
A Wide Range of Career Paths
The school also celebrates the success of students taking alternative paths, often reflecting passions generated during their school years through the outstanding extra-curricular programme. Oliver Edwards will be joining the Royal Navy Aircrew for Officer Pilot training and Thomas Morgan will start officer training at Sandhurst. Madeleine Higgins, who earned three As, is preparing to attend the Oxford School of Drama. Oliver Christopher is set to head to Kansas, USA, on a golf scholarship at Bethany College and Ruth Harper, inspired by her experience with a hospital befriending scheme, is going to the University of Exeter to study Nursing.
The End of an Era for Some
This year the school bids a fond farewell to three families who have all had multiple children at the schools. Tabitha Prosser-Wrench, Miles Taylor and Zsa Zsi Mount, who have achieved eight A*s and three As between them, are the last in the line in families that have been part of the school for many years. The school continues to enjoy watching their successes as they develop their careers beyond school.
A Bright Future Ahead
As these students move on to the next exciting chapter in their lives, Headmaster Simon Dorman and Acting Head Rachel Rees, expressed their pride in the students’ achievements.
Headmaster Simon Dorman said, “We are delighted with our A level students’ grades, reflecting their hard work and the wonderful support of our dedicated teaching staff, which has set them on a path to success, whether in academia, professional sport or vocational training.
