A talented cox at Monmouth School for Boys will be representing Great Britain at a prestigious European junior rowing championships in Italy this week.

Cox Jack will be joined by school coach, Mr Paul Williams, at the 2019 Coupe de la Jeunesse in Corgeno, Italy.

The leading under-18 rowers from GB will be battling it out against the other leading European countries from Thursday (1st August) until Sunday (4th August).

After an intensive trialling and selection process, Jack has once again been selected to cox the GB Junior Men’s coxed four.

Jack, who lives in Devauden near Chepstow, has been fully supported since the end of term by the school’s 1st VIII coach, Mr Williams, who has been chosen to coach the GB VIII.

Last year, Jack and Mr Williams helped Great Britain’s rowers to an outstanding overall victory at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Cork, Ireland.

On that occasion, Mr Williams coached the coxed four crew, which included Jack, to the runners-up spots in two events.

Jack and Mr Williams have played a major role in guiding Monmouth School for Boys Rowing Club to a very successful year.

The school won the Non-Championship VIIIs event at the National Schools’ Regatta in Windsor and then achieved a maiden class win in the national Schools’ Head of the River on the Thames in London.

“Being selected for Great Britain is a tremendous achievement for Jack and Paul but also a huge credit to the school and highlights the heights to which we have risen this year,” said Mr John Griffiths, Master in Charge of Rowing at Monmouth School for Boys.
