Duke of Edinburgh Award training

April 28, 2014

HMSG has a proud tradition of success with the Duke of Edinburgh award, with many girls going on to complete their bronze, silver and gold awards.   This weekend the sports pitches were transformed into a sea of canvas as the Bronze DofE Expedition training took place.  On Saturday the school was abuzz with both indoor and outdoor navigation workshops, first aid scenarios, orienteering and not to mention the best bit… sampling a wide range of food types and cooking with trangias!

After the excitement of the food bags, Saturday evening was spent brushing up on map work and discussing emergency procedures before participants planned a mini expedition for the following day.

After a relatively restful night’s sleep, nine groups set off in different directions from school for a three-hour trek.  They were lucky enough to encounter a variety of weather fronts on their expeditions and when they arrived back at school, some muddier than others, they agreed it had been a useful experience.

Teams will now begin planning their practice and assessed expeditions later on this term.  Thank you to everyone who attended and special thanks to the staff that volunteered to help and allowed the course to run so smoothly.
