Drew’s crowned Bard in wonderful Eisteddfod

March 2, 2022

A 10-year-old boy has been crowned this year’s Bard at the first-ever Eisteddfod at the co-educational Monmouth Prep School.

Year 6 pupil Drew was deservedly crowned the Bard for his outstanding Welsh-themed poem that featured dragons and the national rugby team.

The Crowning of the Bard is one of the most important events in an eisteddfod, which celebrates the Welsh culture through music, drama and verse.

It was the first Eisteddfod involving the girls and boys at Monmouth Prep School since The Grange became fully co-educational in September 2021.

Rosie, from Year 5, carried off the Blue Riband prize for her tremendous contribution to the music competition.

Ten-year-old Rosie played the drums and piano, and also gave a captivating poetry recital from the stage.

The Eisteddfod, at The Blake Theatre, was a huge success as the children enjoyed a celebration of music and culture on St David’s Day, with Yellow House winning the overall main prize.

Head, Mr Neil Shaw, said the standard of entries in the Eisteddfod had been very high and praised the contribution of every boy and girl who took part.
