A former student at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools is celebrating after achieving a first-class honours degree.

Ellie Mone has just graduated from Newcastle University with the top degree classification in Product Design.

She was chosen to represent her university at the New Designers Exhibition and shortlisted for the Young Furniture Makers Award.

During her A level studies at Monmouth School for Girls, Ellie designed and made a lectern from wood to commemorate a local soldier killed in World War One. It won Ellie a prestigious Intellectual Property honour at the annual GCSE innovations awards.

During her degree course, Ellie designed and made a range of stools that took a traditional craft process and made it modern.

Ellie chose weaving and has shaken up this process by using brightly coloured ropes and powdered coated steel to give a contemporary response.
