Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Tennis

Sign up for tennis lessons starting in September 2021

Budding male and female tennis players have a brilliant opportunity to sign up for lessons starting in the Michaelmas term


Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Tennis is for girls and boys from Year 3 to Sixth Form (ages 7 – 18) with lessons taking place at Monmouth School for Girls and Monmouth Schools Sports Club.

Each venue has an indoor and outdoor space available and students will be grouped, in a maximum of six players per session, in terms of their ability:

  • Beginner
  • Improver
  • Intermediate
  • Experienced
    (criteria for each skill level is set out below)

Girls and boys will improve their tennis skills for one hour a week under the guidance of experienced coaches, Adam and Chris Davis.

The cost for the Michaelmas term is £112.50 per child and lasts for 9 weeks.

A drop-in session for those keen to learn more about Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Tennis is being held on Saturday 4th September at Monmouth School for Girls between 10am and noon.

Skill level criteria

Beginner:

  • Has never played or has only just started.
  • Cannot sustain a rally.
  • Is unable to serve.
  • Has no or very little understanding of singles or doubles rules.

Improver:

  • Knows the basic technique of a forehand and backhand stroke.
  • Is able to maintain a short rally with someone who hits the ball back to them.
  • Isn’t comfortable with all strokes and lacks control when trying to hit the ball with accuracy, depth or power.
  • Has a weak serve or struggles to get the serve in.

Intermediate:

  • Has a solid backhand and forehand technique and is able to put spin on the ball.
  • Is able to volley at the net.
  • Is able to serve but may lack consistency.
  • Struggles to win points when playing against stronger players.
  • Has some experience of singles and doubles.

Experienced:

  • Can rally consistently from the baseline and can create opportunities to win points off both their forehand and backhand.
  • Can hit a top spin, slice and can tale the ball early from the baseline and mid court.
  • Has very good anticipation and court coverage.
  • Can serve with placement and power.
  • Has played in competitive singles and doubles matches.

Meet the coaching staff

Chris Davis, Head Coach

Head Coach Chris Davis

Chris graduated from Loughborough University and has coached tennis for nearly 50 years. An experienced match player, Chris has represented Gloucestershire and South Wales on a number of occasions. He has spoken at the Lawn Tennis Association’s ( LTA) National Conference, and assisted with national strategic thinking. He was recognised with a special award by the LTA for his outstanding contribution to tennis development.

Since moving to Monmouth more than 25 years ago, Chris has been instrumental in establishing a number of quality tennis initiatives locally. He has run numerous teacher training events across Wales, on behalf of the LTA, in both primary and secondary schools.

Chris was also a Senior Education Officer in Gloucestershire for more than 20 years, specialising in youth provision and opportunities for 14-21 year olds, and has a lot of experience in the wider educational context.

Chris has led on tennis development at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools since 2009. Chris prides himself in developing more than 20 full time/ part time Tennis coaches during his long career. 


Adam Davis, Development and High Performance Coach

Adam Davis Tennis Academy

Adam started playing tennis at the age of 7 and by 14 had reached National standard. He was Gloucestershire County Champion for five successive years as a junior.

On moving to Wales, Adam represented South Wales and played at a high standard winning many accolades and tournaments. Adam won a Tennis Scholarship to Chester University and then worked for Mark Warner as a Tennis Professional coaching in a number of locations in Greece.

Adam has also coached both in America and New Zealand where he gained invaluable coaching experience and knowledge.

Since returning to Monmouth, he has secured the post of Head Coach at Penallt Tennis Club, providing extensive coaching opportunities for both juniors and adults. He has grown the coaching at Penallt to more than 90 pupils, ranging from children aged four to adults in their 70s. Adam has worked as part of the Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Tennis coaching team since 2012. He is passionate about getting more people involved in tennis and growing the sport throughout the schools. With support from Mrs Rebecca Harris and Mrs Caroline Jones, Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Tennis is keen to include boys and girls from across the schools in its weekly lessons.

Programme

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Tennis players train all year around. Coaching programmes can be tailored to suit the individual and consists of group coaching up to a maximum of 1:6. All sessions are arranged to fit around the players’ academic studies, be it, early morning, afternoons, evenings or weekends.

Lessons will run around the schools extra curricular timetable so some lessons will run before school. There will be some evening lessons and a number of lessons on the weekend.

Additionally, we run non-residential, co-ed Tennis Camps during school holidays, participation in which will be offered on a half-day, full-day or weekly basis, subject to availability.

Drop-in taster session Saturday 4th September at Monmouth School for Girls between 10am to noon
Coaching begins Monday 20th September to Sunday 17th October
Half term (no tennis) Monday 18th October to Sunday 31st October
Coaching resumes Monday 1st November to Sunday 5th December
