Choir sparkles in London carol service

December 7, 2018

Monmouth School for Girls’ Chamber Choir with Director of Music, Mr Derek Harris.

More than 130 people flocked to the second annual Joint Alumni Service of Lessons and Carols in the City of London.

The Chamber Choir at Monmouth School for Girls sang beautifully, under the baton of Mr Derek Harris, at St Lawrence Jewry next Guildhall.

The ages of people who attended the service, for former students at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools, ranged from 18 to 88 years.

The Chamber Choir shone with Mariä Wiegenlied (Reger, arr Beckers); Torches (Joubert), The Wexford Carol (Irish traditional, arr Parry) and The Holly and the Ivy (Gardner).

The hymns included O Little Town of Bethlehem; O Come, All Ye Faithful; Hark! The Herald Angels Sing; Once in Royal David’s City, and O Come O Come, Emmanuel.

Readings were given by Mrs Olwen Davis, Acting Deputy Head at Monmouth School for Girls; pupils Charlotte and Lisa; Old Monmothian, Ryan Turner; Richard Booth QC, Trustee at Monmouth Schools’ Charitable Trust, and Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Chaplain, Reverend Clifford Swartz.

The evening, on Wednesday 5th December, was a resounding success with pupils, staff and former students already looking forward to next year’s service.
