Children at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools donned their best costumes to celebrate World Book Day.

Pupils at home and those at school in key worker provision dressed up as their much-loved story-book characters to take part in live lessons.

Children and staff at Monmouth School Girls’ Prep, in particular, embraced the day and brought the event to life on Thursday 4th March.

Ten-year-old Freya dressed as the Wicked Witch with her spoon character of Alice in Wonderland and signed in from Belgium.

And eight-year-old Nesta, who lives near Abergavenny, joined her live lessons dressed as Paddington.

Mrs Laura Partridge, as English coordinator, also got all staff at Monmouth School Girls’ Prep to record themselves reading extracts of stories or poems in the theme of a Masked Reader event.

“We asked the girls to guess who the staff were behind each mask,” said Mrs Partridge.

She added: “The girls created wooden spoon characters and bookmarks, and there has been a lot of laughter. The girls have really enjoyed watching the staff’s Masked Reader videos.”

Acting Head at Monmouth School Girls’ Prep, Mr Tom Evans, joined in the fun.

He said: “World Book Day is a wonderful and colourful event that helps spark the imagination of every pupil – whether at home or at school.

“Despite challenging circumstances this year, our pupils and staff have embraced World Book Day fully and had a lot of fun.

“Our children love books and we always try to make story-sharing an important part of their everyday lives.”
