Celebration of culture supports poverty-stricken area of South Africa

A celebration of international culture at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools has raised £402 to improve education in one of the most marginalised areas of South Africa.
Fantastic dancing, lovely food and delicious Afghanistan tea lit up the students’ celebration of culture at The Blake Theatre.
Germany, Colombia, South Africa, Afghanistan, Somaliland, Romania, France, Jamaica, India, Spain and the Netherlands were among the nations represented.
The student-led event, organised by the Head Boy at Monmouth School for Boys, Shay, was very well supported.
It raised money for The David Rattray Foundation: KHULA Education, established in 2007 to honour David Rattray’s legacy and to continue his commitment to the people and area around Rorke’s Drift. The organisation improves life in rural KwaZulu-Natal, and mobilises education as a pathway to community empowerment and alleviating poverty.
David Rattray was a South African historian whose storytelling kept alive the memory of the Zulu wars until he was murdered at his home, aged 48.
“We wanted to embrace all of the communities at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools and all the things that make our schools so special,” said organiser, Shay.
