Pentrepoeth’s footballers in tournament triumph

Pentrepoeth Primary School have won The Grange Invitation Six-a-Side Football Tournament in Monmouth for the 10th time.

The Newport-based school’s A team prevailed in the Cup final, beating Osbaston A in a penalty shootout after the match had remained goalless after extra-time.

Goalkeeper Ethan made a fine save in the shootout before Harry calmly drilled home the winning spot-kick.

Pentrepoeth are the most successful side since the primary schools’ tournament, organised annually by Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, was launched in 1997.

It was Pentrepoeth’s first overall triumph since 2012.

Headteacher at Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, Mr Neil Shaw, presented the silverware and medals after a hard-fought tournament on the excellent surface at Monmouth School Sports Club on 22nd January.

Overmonnow B captured the Shield after a 2-1 success against Osbaston B in the final.

The hosts, Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, claimed two honours.

Huw scored the winning goal after neat work from Rupert to give Monmouth School Boys’ Prep C a 1-0 triumph against Kymin View A in the Bowl final.

And Monmouth School Boys’ Prep A carried off the Plate with a 1-0 victory against Overmonnow A in the final.

Mr Shaw said: “The standard of football and sporting behaviour was outstanding throughout and all 10 teams were a huge credit to their schools.”

He thanked the event organiser, Mr Kevin Shepherd, students at Monmouth School for Boys who refereed the matches, and all those who helped make the tournament a huge success.
