In-form Monmouth athlete Harry D clinched a silver medal and helped his school team to a third-placed finish at the Welsh Athletics’ Welsh Cross Country Championships in Swansea.

Harry, who was representing Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, hit excellent form in the 70-strong Primary Boys’ 1,520 metres race, crossing the line in 5:04 – just one second behind the winner.

Harry was backed up Sebastian, who was 17th in 5:29, Matthew, who was 18th in 5:30, and Frank, who was 22nd in 5:38, as Monmouth School Boys’ Prep took third spot in last Saturday’s team event.

Fellow pupils John NB, who was 23rd in 5:41, Ieuan, who was 25th in 5:46, and Cameron H, who was 37th in 6:01, were also a credit to the Monmouth School Boys’ Prep.

Monmouth School Girls’ Prep also fielded three athletes in the Primary Girls’ 1,520 metres race.

Millie, running for the first time, made a confident debut as she finished an impressive 18th out of 56 in 5:59.

Not far behind, and running neck and neck throughout the race, were Jess (6:21) and Grace (6:22) who were 26th and 27th respectively.

Monmouth School for Boys’ teacher, Dr Huw Evans, finished an excellent 27th in the senior men’s race and first in his age category.

Team manager, Mr Alex Dawes, was delighted with the performance from the Monmouth athletes in challenging conditions and against strong opposition.

He added: “We must give a special mention to Darryn McAtee from Newport Harriers, a Welsh Athletics coach and the East Wales team manager, who kindly took our sons and daughters through some extensive pre-race warm up drills and got them fully focused for the competition.”

Harry D was second at the Welsh Cross Country Championships.
