Flying start to Gwent Cross Country League season

The young runners at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools have made an excellent start to the new Gwent Cross Country League season.

Monmouth School Boys’ Prep pupils Matthew and John both achieved outstanding top 10 finishes in the Novice Boys’ race at Llandaff Fields in Cardiff.

Jess led the way for Monmouth School Girls’ Prep, finishing 25th in the Novice Girls’ section, but all 18 athletes were superb and showed tremendous determination.

Matthew, who was eighth in 4:58, and John, who was 10th in 5:00, won t-shirts for their efforts as they excelled in a strong field of 130 finishers.

Also showing plenty of promise were Will, who was 42nd in 5:24, Oliver, 47th in 5:25, Joshua, 53rd in 5:31 and Seb, 60th in 5:33.

Jake, Thomas and Monty also ran determinedly for Monmouth and completed the course.

In the Novice Girls’ race, which had 136 finishers, Jess was the first Monmouth runner home in 25th position in 5:30. Carys also ran confidently, finishing 35th in 5:41.

Also impressing were Verity, who was 42nd in 5:50, Kezia, 45th in 5:52 and Lara, 48th in 5:54.

Gwen, Connie, Imogen and Flora also completed the opening race of season and showed enthusiasm throughout.

The young athletes are now preparing for the second race of the series at Pembrey Country Park in Llanelli on Saturday 9th November.
