Grange choir 2015-5470Talented choirboys have hit all the right notes needed to perform at a national event.

The Grange Choir has been invited to sing at The National Festival of Music for Youth at Symphony Hall in Birmingham on July 8.

Joseph Walton, choir director and music teacher at the school, said: “Being invited to perform at this exciting national event reflects the hard work and dedication of the boys, as well as their ability to improve and develop as an ensemble.”

The boys were asked to perform in Birmingham on the back of a strong performance at The Music for Youth Regional Festival, in Newport last March.

Sarah Freestone, music mentor, praised the commitment and enthusiasm of the boys’ singing, describing it as: “beautiful, poised and mature.”

All of the boys at The Grange will be singing in a performance of Seven Planets and a Cosmic Rock as part of their summer concert at the Blake Theatre on June 29.

The concert will also feature performances and creative work inspired by the BBC’s 10 Pieces project.

Following this successful year for the music department, The Grange will be hosting Monmouth Young Musicians summer course for the first time.

Open to all boys and girls aged between seven and 11, the course takes place over three mornings, from Monday, July 20 to Wednesday, July 22, and costs £60.

Mr Walton said: “Children will enjoy an array of singing games, composition activities and choral singing workshops to help them develop as complete musicians.

“The course is inspired by the Kodály approach, which forms the foundation of musical and choral learning at The Grange.”

The course will be led by Joseph and Daniel Walton, both former music scholars at Monmouth School, alongside Finchley Children’s Music Group conductor Sarah Forbes and Rosie Walton, who led a popular musicianship-based strings project for children at The Sage, Gateshead.
