Admissions journey

A child’s academic journey at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools can start or continue at our Prep School. We are dedicated to encouraging academic brilliance and personal strengths in every pupil as we support them through these vital years.

All children will have an interview-style chat with the Head of Monmouth Prep School, Mr Neil Shaw. The boys and girls will also take a short age-appropriate test in Maths and English.

We may also ask to see a sample of a child’s work. Not only does this help us determine a child’s academic potential, but it is also an opportunity for your child’s individualism and personality to shine.

We normally admit new pupils in Year 3 at the start of the Michaelmas term. However, we are happy to consider applications for other year groups and at other times, subject to places being available.

Entry assessment date – for 2021 entry
Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 entry March 2021 by appointment
We also offer year-round entry, should places be available.

Entrance tests

All prospective pupils will be invited to attend the school for entrance assessments prior to admission. Tests for ages  7+, 8+, 9+ and 10+ are held early in the second half of the Lent term, usually in early March. These include assessments for reading, mathematics, story writing and reasoning.

Entrance tests can be arranged at other times during the school year. Offers will be made in writing within two weeks of taking the test. There are normally two classes in each year.

We like to feel reasonably confident that any boy who joins us will be able to proceed into the senior school at age eleven. All our pupils are required to take the entrance assessments into the senior school and as the school has a very strong academic tradition, our own candidates need to be able to reach the necessary standard of attainment at the end of their four years in Monmouth School Boys’ Prep.
