Wicketkeeping masterclass for promising cricketers

November 8, 2018

Four Monmouth students have been sharpening their wicketkeeping skills under the guidance of former Glamorgan captain, Mark Wallace.

Joe, Harry H, Nathan and Henry have received expert coaching from Mark, who represented England Under-19s and spent 18 years in Glamorgan’s first-team.

The four teenage cricketers are pupils at Monmouth School for Boys, which formed an exciting partnership with Glamorgan County Cricket Club earlier this year.

“I have been impressed with the skill base of the four wicketkeepers,” said Mark, who grew up in Crickhowell and played 264 first-class matches before retiring from the professional arena in 2017.

“I am very passionate about Welsh cricket and to help these boys with extra tuition at school is fantastic.”

Last month, Glamorgan’s assistant coach and head analyst, David Harrison, who will be helping in England Lions’ tours this winter, worked with a group of the school’s leading seam bowlers.

He carried out a detailed video analysis of the young bowlers and provided valuable feedback.

Talented batsman Harry F, 15, has been selected for Glamorgan’s academy programme after hitting more than 2,000 runs in 2018.

Mark Wallace added: “Jeremy Lawlor, an Old Monmothian, played for Glamorgan last season and hopefully a few other boys from the school can follow in his footsteps in the not too distant future.”
