Music Facilities

The Music Department is housed in the Glover Music School, named after a former Headmaster, Robert Glover.

The Music School offers ten teaching/practice studios, three classrooms, ICT Suite (renewed in 2019), store rooms, offices, and the Auditorium, a large, flexible space in which we rehearse our larger ensembles and present smaller-scale performances. The practice studios are all equipped with good pianos, and the classrooms house a wide range of musical resources from both the western tradition and music around the world. The Music ICT Suite runs Sibelius, Sonar CakeWalk, SoundForge and other notating and digital editing applications, as well as portable digital recording equipment. The Auditorium houses a Bösendorfer concert grand piano and a two-manual and pedal organ (Binns), as well as what is probably the largest battery of orchestral percussion in a school outside London, including four copper pedal timps, Gran Casa, orchestral tam tam, xylophones, vibraphone, full-size marimba, orchestral bells, piatti, gongs, roto toms, two kits, congas, bongos, and numerous small effects. The School houses two other organs, in the Theatre (Makin Digital) and Chapel (Nicholson), as well as having access to the large three-manual and pedal Nicholson in the Priory Church.

Large-scale performances take place in the fully-equipped Blake Theatre, St. Mary’s Priory Church, the Wyastone Concert hall and, occasionally, in other off-site national venues in both Cardiff and London. The theatre seats 550, houses a Steinway Model M grand piano, and is used extensively by outside organizations for professional performances. Services, and very occasionally performances, take place in the School Chapel, a space which houses a number of works of art and is much valued by the School.

The department maintains a large, comprehensive, and well-maintained stock of orchestral and band instruments, which are leased to pupils at low rates for use in School ensembles, though musicians are encouraged to acquire their own instruments when possible.
