Two Monmouth students are making a big impact with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.

Batsman, Michael, and leg-spinner, Sam, will be training with the professional county’s under-17s squad in Bristol this winter.

The Monmouth School for Boys’ duo have been recognised as ‘high potential youngsters’ and will receive additional specialist training as part of Gloucestershire’s Emerging Player Programme (EPP).

It caps another memorable county season for Michael, who has just won Gloucestershire Under-15s Player of the Season award.

Michael received his trophy from Gloucestershire’s Head of Talent Pathway, Tim Hancock, at the end-of-season awards.

Michael, aged 15, also had an excellent season with Monmouth School for Boys, hitting an outstanding unbeaten century in difficult conditions during their pre-season tour to Sri Lanka.

Gloucestershire spokesman, Chris Germaine, said: “Michael is one of the quietest in the squad but stands tall amongst his peers.

“A batsman with effortless timing, he performed magnificently during the season, scoring more than 450 runs for Gloucestershire, including a best of 109 not out against Glamorgan.”

Sam, also 15, was invited to bowl at the England women’s cricket team during the summer in a three-hour net session in Bristol.

Sam also had a fine 2018 campaign and recorded the school’s best-ever first-team bowling figures when he snapped up 8-23 against Solihull School.
