Tom’s sister, Holly, has designed the eye-catching logo.

More than 200 people will be taking the plunge in a swimathon in memory of a teenager who died unexpectedly earlier this year.

The event is part of a major initiative to raise £100,000 towards a dedicated fund in Tom’s name to pay for a PhD research project into leukaemia.

Tom was a quiet and considerate pupil at Monmouth School for Boys and his death in June, aged just 13 years old, has been felt by the community.

Tom’s 12-year-old sister Holly, a pupil at Monmouth School for Girls, is organising a swimathon, called Swim for Tom, on Sunday 6th January 2019.

She has also designed the eye-catching event logo.

Registration for the swim closes on Saturday 1st December and everyone will be notified of their slots next week.

The swimathon will take place in the pool at Monmouth School for Girls and aims to cover a distance of 430km – equivalent to the length of the River Wye and back – and a total of 17,200 lengths.

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools and Cancer Research Wales are supporting the swimathon and hope people from across the community will join in.

Tom’s mum, Debbie, said: “We now have 220 swimmers registered, which is fantastic, but ideally we need in the region of 300. A final push from everyone would be great.”
