Summer Art exhibition report

June 26, 2017

A warm summer’s evening and ‘Culture’ oozed from the beautiful Hitchcock Pavilion in the form of fine art and music. For the first time the stylish space and perfect natural light in the sports pavilion was the ideal venue to celebrate our GCSE and A Level artist’s creations.

A full pavilion enjoyed the variety of work on display; from funky street-art portraits and the flashing lights of Hong Kong to tendril filled skulls and calming green-men… there was something for everyone! The standard of observational drawing was impressive; this had been enhanced by additional ‘sight-size’ drawing with Lucy Corbett at the Welsh Academy of Arts. A dozen ceramic heads looked on, including Donald Trump, Mohammed Ali, and a gurning Mr Peake! These had been modelled during a 2-day workshop under the guidance of the inspirational ceramisist, Rebecca Buck and have remained in the pavilion as a talking point and inspiration to others.

‘Identity’ was the starting point for pupils, who explored a breadth of media including oil paints, clay, print and stencilling. With many Portraiture based outcomes, Chris’s striking colourful portrait of his friend Nyasha took second place in the public vote for their favourite artwork. Harry’s, highly embellished, Aztec influenced ceramic ‘Sun Goddess’ was awarded first place. Both of these artworks have been selected for exhibition as part of the ‘Art in Penallt Festival’ in late August. Amanda Jack, festival curator said, “I was totally blown away by the high standard of artistic creativity on display, throughout the whole exhibition. Chris’s vibrant sense of colour was used to great effect, in portraying a depth of emotion in his sitter – so fresh and exciting! Harry’s work is both intriguing and ambitious, demonstrating a skilful knowledge of design and construction, whilst retaining feeling. This high standard of artistic talent is down to the enthusiasm and hard work of Matt Peake and his team – which should be celebrated as a major artistic triumph throughout the school”

Wilfrid was thrilled to be offered a commission to produce a Modigliani style oil portrait from a budding art collector who was impressed by the quality of his painting.

The evening was made all the more enjoyable by delicious refreshments and the calming music provided by Sara Greenwood and the ‘Tour Strings’ musicians, Michael, Sam, Christopher, Gwilym and Tudor.

With sculpture park and street-art tours already planned, we look forward to next year’s flurry of creativity! A massive well done to all of our artists and superb Art & Design team.
