A sportsman who made a big impact for the school’s teams will be running out at the home of English rugby union this afternoon.

Sam Troughton, 25, has been picked in Cambridge University’s squad for the 136th Men’s Varsity Match against Oxford University at Twickenham Stadium (3pm kick-off).

Cardiff-born Sam played prop for Monmouth School for Boys’ 1st XV and rowed for the 1st VIII for two years.

While the Light Blues hold the Varsity Match trophy following a 23-18 win last year, Oxford will come into the clash on the back of eight wins in 10 games.

Sam, who is studying at Robinson College, played in the match between Oxford Greyhounds and Cambridge LX Club last year.

He will start on the bench for defending champions Cambridge.

Mr David Hope, Senior Mentor and Housemaster at Monmouth School for Boys’ Weirhead House, said: “Sam joined us in Form III and was in Chapel House.

“Whilst at school he played prop for the 1st XV for two years and rowed in the 1st VIII for two years.

“He went to Robinson College, Cambridge, as an undergraduate to study Natural Sciences.”

The Varsity Match has been played at Twickenham since 1920, having previously been at Queen’s Club (1887 – 1920), Blackheath (1880 – 1886), The Oval (1873 – 1880), and University Parks (1872).
