Sports News: Sevens Season underway

January 26, 2016

RugbyEvery week we will endeavour to keep you up to date with all of the sporting action at Monmouth School, whether it be in the gym, on the fields in the river or at the pool. The following is the report for last week from the captain of the Rugby 1st VII as they begin their Spring campaign:

‘Yesterday we had our first Sevens tournament of 2016 and despite little preparation due to our mock examinations it was a good day overall.

In our first few games we started out rather rusty and played a very 15 aside style of rugby however this was enough to overcome our opposition and after we had a few games under our belt we began to play a much better style of sevens.

We triumphed in our group winning every game and we came across Sherbourne in the semi finals, who had previously beaten us at 15s earlier in the season so we knew we would need to be at our best. With good tries from Lucas and Alexi we were set in a good position at half time. And towards the end of the game Sebastian, after a good line out move, sealed our win so we were then ready to go up against Cheltenham College in the final. Despite some good tries from Laurie and Mazhar we lost by just 3 tries to 2 in a close exciting final.

I would like to thank everyone involved but a special thanks goes to Mazhar and Cedric who were playing a year up but did get a handful of tries between them.

With many tournaments to come I am sure we will be at our best when we go to the Rosslyn Park Sevens Tournament later in the season.
