Tennis

Tennis is a very popular sport on both a competitive and recreational level at Monmouth School for Boys.  Exclusively a Summer term sport, boys have the option of playing at a ‘recreational’ or ‘competitive’ level and benefit from weekly sessions with external coaches.

We also enter a boys and Monmouth Boys/Girls mixed team in the AEGON League Senior Students Competition

The school has nine Astro turf courts and one hard court on site, with the additional use of eight hard courts at Monmouth School for Girls. Up to six teams will represent the School on a Saturday during the summer and a number of mixed fixtures highlight our close working relationship with Monmouth School for Girls.

Each venue has an indoor and outdoor space available and students will be grouped, in a maximum of six players per session, in terms of their ability:

  • Beginner
  • Improver
  • Intermediate
  • Experienced
    (criteria for each skill level is set out below).

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Tennis players train all year around. Coaching programmes can be tailored to suit the individual and consists of group coaching up to a maximum of 1:6. All sessions are arranged to fit around the players’ academic studies, be it, early morning, afternoons, evenings or weekends.

Lessons will run around the schools extra curricular timetable so some lessons will run before school. There will be some evening lessons and a number of lessons on the weekend.

Additionally, we run non-residential, co-ed Tennis Camps during school holidays, participation in which will be offered on a half-day, full-day or weekly basis, subject to availability.

Skill level criteria

Beginner:

  • Has never played or has only just started.
  • Cannot sustain a rally.
  • Is unable to serve.
  • Has no or very little understanding of singles or doubles rules.

Improver:

  • Knows the basic technique of a forehand and backhand stroke.
  • Is able to maintain a short rally with someone who hits the ball back to them.
  • Isn’t comfortable with all strokes and lacks control when trying to hit the ball with accuracy, depth or power.
  • Has a weak serve or struggles to get the serve in.

Intermediate:

  • Has a solid backhand and forehand technique and is able to put spin on the ball.
  • Is able to volley at the net.
  • Is able to serve but may lack consistency.
  • Struggles to win points when playing against stronger players.
  • Has some experience of singles and doubles.

Experienced:

  • Can rally consistently from the baseline and can create opportunities to win points off both their forehand and backhand.
  • Can hit a top spin, slice and can tale the ball early from the baseline and mid court.
  • Has very good anticipation and court coverage.
  • Can serve with placement and power.
  • Has played in competitive singles and doubles matches.
