School will host two Glamorgan matches this summer

February 28th, 2019

Monmouth School for Boys’ picturesque sports ground and facilities will be hosting two Glamorgan County Cricket Club matches this summer.

Glamorgan Seconds will face Essex Seconds in a one-day Second XI Trophy match at Monmouth on Monday 10th June (11am).

And the school’s excellent facilities will be the venue for Glamorgan Seconds’ three-day friendly against old rivals Worcestershire Seconds, starting on Tuesday 27th August (11am).

Former Monmouth student, Jeremy Lawlor, forced his way into Glamorgan’s first team last summer, before being named as the county’s Second team Player of the Year.

Sixteen-year-old Harry, who scored 2,037 runs last summer, has been selected for Glamorgan’s academy programme and is on a pre-season training camp in Mumbai, India.

The Year 11 pupil has been following a high-performance plan with Glamorgan throughout the winter covering all aspects of his development including technical, tactical, physical, mental and lifestyle.

Monmouth School for Boys began an exciting partnership with Glamorgan last year which was launched with a flagship match for the school’s under-15s against Wales Under-14s at Sophia Gardens.

At the time, Glamorgan’s Chief Executive, Hugh Morris, described Monmouth as the ‘premier cricket school in Wales’.

“Monmouth is one of the top independent schools in Wales and the premier cricket school in Wales and it makes a lot of sense that we work more collaboratively,” said Mr Morris.

New Glamorgan Director of Cricket, Mark Wallace, and former players David Harrison, who has worked as England Lions’ Head Analyst and Coaching Assistant this winter, Dean Cosker and Steve James have all visited the school to coach Monmouth’s pupils.

Director of Sport at Monmouth School for Boys, Mr Andrew Jones, said: “Our link with Glamorgan is progressing very positively.

“I am confident that many further exciting opportunities will develop from our excellent partnership.”

Monmouth School for Boys last hosted Glamorgan Seconds in July 1996 when the county played Hampshire Seconds in a one-day contest.

The school was the venue for three Second Eleven Championship matches involving Glamorgan between 1972 and 1974.

Monmouthshire’s Minor Counties team played home matches at the school ground during 1929 and 1930.
