Thomas and captain Nathan opened the batting for Monmouth School for Boys.
Cricketers at Monmouth School for Boys finished runners-up in an inaugural Welsh Schools Day – 100 Ball Tournament at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
The school’s first team defeated Christ College, Brecon in their semi-final but were then beaten by a more experienced Welsh Colleges side in the final.
It was a tremendous day for the Monmouth boys who enjoyed playing at the home of Glamorgan County Cricket Club on Wednesday 26th June.
The event was organised by Mr Andrew Jones, Director of Sport at Monmouth School for Boys, as part of the school’s flourishing relationship with Glamorgan.
The Monmouth students also experienced, for the first time, the new 100-ball format developed by the England and Wales Cricket Board for the professional arena next summer.
As in next summer’s new 100-ball cricket league, the matches contained 10 ten-ball overs and a bowler was allowed to deliver five or 10 consecutive balls.
In their semi-final, Monmouth posted 134-4 off 20 overs with contributions from Michael (41), Sam (29 not out) and Josh (22 not out).
Despite a valiant batting effort from Brecon, Monmouth bowled and fielded very well to dismiss their rivals for 69.
However, the Welsh Colleges side proved too strong for Monmouth in the final, sealing a 75-run success.
Welsh Colleges had reached the final after comfortably overcoming The Cathedral School, Llandaff, earlier in the day.
Monmouth’s bowlers and fielders rallied to restrict Welsh Colleges to 142-5 but their tiring side, missing several experienced players, were dismissed for 67 in the 16th over.
