Rowers take ‘victor ludorum’ at National Champs

November 29, 2019

On the 22nd of November, over 40 students from both Monmouth School for Girls Boat Club and Monmouth School Rowing Club took part in Welsh Indoor School Rowing Championships. Wherein the athletes had to row on an ergometer, against other schools from around the country with the race being displayed on a big screen above them. The J15s took part in a 5-minute row, narrowly missing out on a medal position. However later storming through the opposition, placing second in the team event, being able to bring some metal back home.

The J16’s also put a good performance down, setting some new Personal Best times on a 2000m ergometer test, which during winter training is a good early sign of very fast times to come!

The J17’s once again got a clean sweep of Gold, Silver and Bronze for Hamish, Rui and Angus respectively. One of the highlights was Hamish setting a new record beating last year’s stroke of the 1st VIII, Iwan Hadfield, who was also commentating at the event. Roan, J18, also smashed the competition, placing 1st. The biggest achievement of the day, however, was winning the “Victor Ludorum”, with the Monmouth Team winning the greatest number of medals throughout the day, overall a very successful day.
