Oarsome Iwan picked for GB at Under-23 World Championships

July 1st, 2021

A former student at Monmouth School for Boys has been picked to represent Great Britain at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships next week.

Iwan Hadfield is among just 24 rowers, across seven boats, who will represent GB in Racice, Czech Republic, from 7th to 11th July.

He was a rowing scholar at Monmouth and won a bronze medal for GB at the 2019 World Junior Championships in Japan.

The Old Monmothian will be joining forces with Matt Rowe, Henry Blois-Brooke and Dan Graham in the men’s four (M4-).

“Congratulations to Iwan, who rowed in our school 1st VIII in 2018 and 2019, who has been selected in the GB 4- at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships,” said Mr John Griffiths, Master in Charge of Rowing at Monmouth School for Boys.

“It’s a fabulous achievement by Iwan and we also wish the best of luck to the whole British Rowing team.”

Peter Sheppard, British Rowing’s chief coach for Under-23s and Juniors, said: “This is an opportunity for our under-23s to go out and show what they can do on the world stage again after two years without racing.”

Iwan, who is now a member of the Leander club, previously secured a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley, one of the sport’s leading universities.

At the time, Iwan said: “Monmouth School for Boys Rowing Club has allowed me to row at the highest level possible, culminating in representing Great Britain at the World Junior Championships.

“More importantly, the school has continued to support me after I left.”

Iwan learnt to row with Cardiff and Vale Schools Rowing Academy, before moving to Monmouth School for Boys on a rowing scholarship in the Sixth Form.

He gained selection for Wales at the Home International Regattas of 2017 and 2018 and represented Great Britain at the 2019 Munich Junior Regatta in Germany.

Iwan then won a bronze medal for GB, stroking the eight at the Junior World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

He has since coached at both Shiplake College and Henley Rowing Club and joined the Leander club.

Mr Griffiths said: “Iwan consistently put in the hard graft both on and off the water throughout his whole time with us at Monmouth.

“But what was particularly special about Iwan is that he always supported the whole club – right from the junior rowers just starting out to the rest of his crew mates at the top level. We’re all very proud of him.”
